It has been a privilege for me to get know people from around the world trough my blog. Recently, one of my reader informed me that she just passed her AMC-MCQ. I asked her if I can ask her some questions and share her experience with us, and she said "yes". So I sent her email and she has been generously answered all my questions.

I hope it will be useful for those who still preparing for the exam.

Dear P.R (I am using initials for privacy reason)

Below are some questions that I have regarding your experience.

Firstly, can you tell me a little about yourself and your medical background?
I am an IMG from the Philippines. I got my degree in 2014 and finished a year medical internship the following year. In 2016, I decided to move to New Zealand.

How long did you need to prepare for the exam and can you tell me a little about your study plan?
Honestly, I didnt have a study plan. I began preparing for it two months prior my scheduled exam. I made it a point that I am reading at least 1 topic or answering at least 50 questions per day during my 2-month preparation.

What were the difficulties you faced during the preparation, and how did you overcome them?
I think since I am preparing on my own (self study) the greatest challenge was procastination. There were days that I was very lazy and everytime I'd read I almost fell asleep.
Because of this, I made sure that I was pumped up with coffee and in a place that has a good ambience for studying. I also played music to keep me awake.

What were materials you used, that you found useful?
What I found very useful was the AMC blue book. I used it to familiarise myself on how the questions are asked. AMC questions are very different from what I'm used to. I also answered recall questions. For the topics that I did not understand, I referred back to Murtagh's.

If you do not mind me asking, how many times did you sit the AMC MCQ, and what led you to success?
I was not successful on my first attempt. It shattered my confidence and said to myself that maybe I am not good enough for this.
I am not sure on how I regained my confidence back. One day I said to myself that I need to be doing something for me to be able to move forward. So I scheduled my next exam and that was it - no turning back. With God's grace, I passed.

Is there anything that you regret doing in term of your preparation?
I think if I prepared more seriously and had a study schedule that I strictly followed, the outcome would have been better.

Finally, what is your suggestion,or tips for those who are preparing for the exam?
-First would be to book for the exam. If you have booked your exam, you will prepare more seriously.
-Second, dont be afraid to ask questions about the things you are unsure of. There are a lot of online groups who are willing to help to answer your queries. Like Imelda, I used to asked her a lot of questions about AMC and about practising medicine in New Zealand. She provides very useful information and I really appreciate her for doing this.
-Third, familiarise yourself with the form of questions in AMC-MCQ. Read the blue book and answer recall questions. When in doubt, always consult John Murtagh's.
-Lastly, pray. As I am Catholic, I prayed to God that He would prepare my mind and body for this exam. I prayed and asked Him to be with me throughout this journey.

Congratulation again on passing the AMC MCQ, and thank you so much for dedicating your time answering questions about your preparation and exam experience to help others that will go on the same path. Good luck on your NZREX, I look forward to hearing more good news from you.

Hi Imelda.. thanks for sharing your friend's experience and a huge congratulations to her! After reading this, i also felt that i should also share my experience and tips for AMC MCQ.. happy to say that i also passed it this March 2017. I am also from the Philippines and studying AMC was not an easy journey after practicing paediatrics for 10 years and the medical gap for general medicine was obviously vague.

I was booked to sit in the exam in Nov 2016 but i my gutfeel says i am not ready yet, so i rebooked in March 2017. Turning point is when i joined study groups and studied with candidates thru skype discussions from all over the world. It was a difficult journey but not impossible..Thank God, I passed in 1st attempt!

So here are some of my advices for future AMC candidates which i posted in one of fb amc study groups.. all the best!

We all came from different backgrounds and experiences, so the one that worked for me, may or may not work for someone else but i will try my best to give what helped me the most in the exam. :) I didnt have much guidance back then, so I also just read tips from previous successful exam takers (just search the group and it will pop out). I also didn't have a systematic way of studying as I am much clueless too in the beginning and just worked my way through as I go along.
1) BACK TO BASICS: I have been practicing paediatrics for the last 10 years, so my knowledge of other specialty has been vague :( . I started with the AMC handbook and read important topics (including the options) from JM 6th ed. I have watched youtube videos of topics which was not clear to me and viewed over and over until my brain absorbed it. I did not read JM cover to cover, but as you go through you will realize you have almost read most of it. :p But study the important topics from HB and recalls.
2) OTHER SOURCES: Remember this is an Australian exam, so stick to their guidelines as much as possible. If I did not find it in JM, i will search it on Aussie websites such as Australian doctor, MJA, RACGP, RCH or basically any australian medical website. Or Non-Aussie websites Emedicine, uptodate, NIH, Wikipedia. The only other reference book i studied besides JM is Kaplan, but I only went for the concepts here not the guidelines as Kaplan is US-based not Aussie. I strongly suggest Psych and Ethics in Kaplan. This helped me a lot in answering in the exam (i had a lot of psych and some ethics Qs).
3) RECALLS: A vital source of information and must-do for the exam. Cover at least the last 6 months or even a year of recalls. If in doubt, don't settle on other people's answers, find it on your own and SHARE your knowledge. This can help others but most esp yourself. Don't just answer the Q, rule out the options as well. This helped me a lot in the exam, when you have 5 options and you can narrow it down to two, it will save you lots of time. Just practice, practice, practice (it makes everything perfect!) :)
4) STUDY GROUP: This was the gamechanger for me. I was studying alone for 2 months as I was still clearing my concepts that time. I dont want to slow down the group because of the basic stuff and also I want to impart something too when I join. So when I felt that I am ready, I joined the group. Thank God I found committed, hardworking, generous group of people who are also taking the exam near my exam date.
OUR GOAL: answer the recalls and clear the concepts and guidelines! So we divided it amongst us and meet thru Skype daily for 2-3 or even 4-5 hrs to discuss the Qs. We had to time ourselves as discussion in 1 Q may go on for 15 to 30 mins or even longer if we came across a tricky one. It was very tiring but all worth it :) This really helped me a lot in the exam as I am able recall what we have discussed and i can reason out why i am choosing this answer. Join Amedex or Alrazi group in fb.. they are big help!
5) QBANKS: On my first few months, I subscribed in CanadaQbank which helped me in clearing the basic concepts though Qs are not so AMC-like. Then, I did AMC qbank from the files section of Amedex, some of Qs was very similar to recalls and the way they ask it in the exam proper. So if you have time, just go thru it and practice answering. In my last 3 months (aggitated as I am), I subscribed again in Qbank (learnmed). The videos are helpful but as I was busy revising what I studied, I only used it for a month. I think Qbanks are for security blanket. Just decide if it suits you or not.
6) LAST MONTH BEFORE THE EXAM: Revise RECALLS, ECGs, CTGs, Xrays, Fundoscopy pics, CT scans, Anthology pics ( this i did the night before hehe) they use the same pics in the exam so familiarize yourself.
7) DURING THE EXAM: I got a lot of palpitations.. and it did not go away til 3am on my exam day (my exam was 830am!). When the 1st Q came out from the screen, it was the scariest part. But as I go through along the Qs, I felt at ease and kept myself calm. With all the months of studying, revising and discussin

Continuation...
With all the months of studying, revising and discussing, the questions felt familiar and I was able to do what we practiced.. CHOOSE THE ANSWER THAT THEY ARE ASKING. Best, next, most appropriate, initial. In the exam, I scan the options briefly, read the last line of the Q, read the whole stem thoroughly and read the options again. Then choose WHAT THEY ARE ASKING. A lot of tricky Qs but you can do it!
TIME: I was mindful of the time. Too mindful, I got extra 45 mins left. But because there were also Qs which I became familiar with so I was able to answer and go thru the next in a faster pace.
CHANGING ANSWERS: Since i got extra time, I was able to run thru all the Qs again. And changed some answers... which most of them I changed to wrong answers (when I checked after the exam). Yeah, too bad. So make sure to change it only if you are very sure.
7) PRAY: After the exam, I went straight to the movies and fave resto with the husband and eat our hearts out! :D Pray and let God! You have done your part, Let God do the rest! <3 ENJOY. YOUR. FREEDOM. :D
Hope this helps someone. <3 Continue sharing your knowledge and help each other to succeed. Give back and the world will give a hundredfold to you!

I am now preparing for NZREX.. thank you for sharing the essentials and tips Imelda! All the best! - Odette

Hello. I just recently moved to NZ, 2weeks precisely and am thinking of writing AMC. Please I have a few questions. What is this AMC blue book? Is it the AMC MCQ book? And if it's not, anyone that wants to sell their copy should be signify. Also you said they use the same pictures for CT and co, where can I find these pictures? Thanks.

HI, my story is similar to yours (I bombed out the first time, and I want to prove to myself that I can pass the MCQ test first). I want to take preparation for AMC MCQ test. Can I possibly know the Q-banks you used? Recall questions that you reviewed? Thanks
